Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
